Nourish Your Body with Simple Nutrition

Even small dietary changes can help reduce inflammation, support your immune system, and improve energy. - Focus on whole, colorful foods: veggies, fruits, lean proteins, healthy fats - Stay hydrated—even mild dehydration can increase fatigue - Try easy-to-digest meals if you’re feeling nauseous (like broths, smoothies, and steamed veggies) - Ask your provider about safe, treatment-supportive supplements Tip: If food smells overwhelm you, try eating cooler foods like smoothies or yogurt

Reduce Stress with Mind-Body Practices

Stress affects your physical and emotional health—and integrative care can help manage it gently and effectively. - Practice 5–10 minutes of mindful breathing daily - Try gentle yoga or stretching to release physical tension - Use guided meditations, prayer, or affirmations that center and calm you - Explore acupuncture or reiki for nervous system support Tip: You don’t need to “clear your mind”—just notice your breath. That alone helps.

Don’t Forget the Caregiver

If you’re supporting a loved one with cancer, your well-being matters too. It’s not selfish to rest, ask for help, or set boundaries. - Take breaks, even 5–10 minutes at a time, to reset - Connect with caregiver support groups or online communities - Focus on nourishing meals and hydration for yourself too - Practice mini-meditations or breathwork to ground yourself in stressful moments Tip: The stronger you are, the more present you can be for your loved one.

Prioritize Restorative Sleep

Sleep is when your body heals—but cancer-related stress, pain, or medications can make rest difficult. - Create a calming nighttime routine (same time each night, screen-free wind-down) - Avoid heavy meals or stimulants (like caffeine) close to bedtime - Use meditation, soft music, or guided imagery to ease your mind - Ask us about integrative tools like acupuncture or gentle herbs to support sleep naturally Tip: Even short naps during the day can help reduce treatment-related fatigue

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? You're not alone. Here are some of the most common things patients and caregivers ask us—and our honest, evidence-informed answers.

Can integrative therapies interfere with chemotherapy?

Some therapies—especially certain herbs or supplements—can interfere with chemotherapy drugs or increase side effects if not used carefully. That’s why it’s important to work with a trained integrative provider who understands both conventional cancer treatments and complementary approaches. At IntegrativeOnco, every therapy we recommend is reviewed for safety and personalized to your treatment plan. We aim to support your healing, not disrupt it.

How do I know what's safe to try?

What’s “safe” depends on your diagnosis, treatment, medications, and personal health history. While practices like acupuncture or gentle yoga are generally low-risk, things like supplements or detoxes can be harmful if used without guidance. Our role is to help you make informed, evidence-based choices—avoiding risky trends and focusing on options that are backed by research and aligned with your medical care.

Are services covered by insurance?

Some integrative therapies may be partially or fully covered depending on your insurance plan. For example, acupuncture is increasingly covered for cancer-related pain or nausea, and nutrition consults are sometimes reimbursable. We’re happy to provide superbills or documentation for reimbursement. Before starting care, our team can help clarify coverage and discuss affordable options.

Should I tell my oncologist I’m using integrative care?

Yes—open communication is essential. Your oncologist should know about all therapies you're using, including supplements, herbs, and body-based treatments. We support collaborative care and can communicate directly with your oncology team if needed. When integrative and conventional medicine work together, your safety and outcomes are stronger.
